Alban Vineyards

Established in 1989, John Alban planted the first American vineyard dedicated solely to Rhone grape varieties.  Today he has close to 25 hectares planted to Syrah, Viognier and Roussanne, and mosr recently Grenache.  Some grapes, including Mourvedre, is purchased from nearby growers.

Interestingly, Alban trekked to Barolo in 1995 to further his skills, believing that Nebbiolo's tannins and acidity were not dissimilar to the attributes he was finding in his Syrah.

The most striking feature of his wines (particularly his Syrahs) is the extended oak ageing - now out to 44 months - in new and used French barriques.  Importantly, he prefers to use non-toasted barrels - a rarity - as he doesn't want overt toastiness or smokiness in his wines.

Alban's wines, made from organic, low-yielding grape varities and fermented with natural yeasts, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
