Established in the mid 1980s originally as a local co-operative, Artadi, owned by the thoughtful Juan Carlos Lopez de Lacalle, rapidly gained a serious reputation for the production of top-quality wines, and today is rightfully considered not just one of Spain's, but the world's great producers.le-clos-el-pison.jpg

Today, Artadi produce four distinct single-vineyard wines - the fabled 'Vina El Pison' as well three new wines (introduced with the 2009 vintage) 'El Carretil', 'La Poza' and 'Valdegines' - and their excellent old-vine blend of those three sites, 'Pagos Viejos'.  

Alongside these majestic wines, Artadi also make two more affordable and earlier-drinking wines, the Estate Tempranillo and the 'Vinas de Gain', both from younger vines.

Today, around 90 hectares of estate vines provide much of the fruit for the entire production, with a small portion still being purchased.  Yields are low, grapes harvested and sorted by hand (with a subsequent vibrating table sorting as well) and given a pre-ferment maceration for about four or five days.  All fermentations are completed using natural yeasts in very large wooden vats, with the wines placed in barriques for malolactic fermentations and ageing for 15 - 18 months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
