Doug Balnaves established his eponymous winery in 1987, having planted and managed thousands of acres of vines in Coonawarra for nearly 20 years prior.  Indeed, Doug was born and bred in the area, although sheep grazing was his family's occupation before Hungerford Hill purchased their land and convinced Doug to stay and plant and manage a vineyard for them on the property.balnaves-tower-view.jpg

Pete Bissell was installed as winemaker (poached from Wynns) and wine quality has soared.  Today Balances owns 75ha of vines and manages a further 350 throughout Coonawarra and Wrattonbully, although much of this is processed on behalf of others.

Cabernet Sauvignon unsurprisingly is king here (as indeed it is throughout Coonawarra) and Balnaves wines are amongst the best in the region.  The hallmarks of Balnaves' wines are their complexity and finesse, classic Coonawarra yet distinctive in their own right.
