Cellar de Capcanes

Located in the north-eastern portion of Spain, high in the hills inland from Barcelona surrounding the much more recognised Priorat region, Cellar de Capcanes is something of a hidden gem.  Both a co-operative and the name of the village in which it's located, Cellar de Capcanes operates more like an estate than a traditional co-operative, producing a range of wines tiered in quality (for which the growers are comensurately rewarded).vinyes-de-cabrida.jpg

More than half of the 190 hectares of fruit Capcanes draws from are managed organically, with more converting each year.  Yields are very low, and growers are encouraged financially to strive for he highest possible quality.  More than half of the vines are Garnacha, with Samso the next most significant (around 20%).

These wines are at once powerful, yet with wonderful minerality and freshness to them. An exceptional maker.
