Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion

lmhb-chateau.jpgLocated literally across the road (Avenue Jean Jaures) from its centuries-old rival, and since 1983 sister property, Haut-Brion, 'La Mish' in no play second fiddle to its first growth neighbour.  Despite their proximity and similar lengthy history (both grew to fame in the 16th century), the wines of La Mission Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion are noticeably different, yet are unquestionably two of the very greatest Bordeaux wines - period.lmhb.jpg

Drawing upon a modest 21 hectares of vines, planted to 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc, LMHB's wine is more powerful and rich than Haut-Brion, and perhaps even more age-worthy. Winemaking (since it's 1983 purchase) is essentially the same as Haut-Brion, as both properties come under the winemaking responsibility of M. Delmas.

Production is considerably smaller than most left-bank properties, averaging perhaps 7,000 cases per year.  The wine is utterly distinctive, full of rich, powerful roast earth, mineral and exotic spices.  What it lacks in elegance and finesse (compared with Haut-Brion) it makes up for in terms of complexity and depth.
