Domaine Rousseau

rousseau-sign.jpgConsidered one of the top producers, not just in Gevrey-Chambertin, but in the entire Cote de Nuits, Rousseau make sublime, elegant-yet-intense and complex red Burgundies at (relatively) sensible prices.  Drawing from more than 13 hectares, including superb plots of Chambertin and Chambertin ‘Clos de Beze’ that produce some of Burgundy’s greatest wines most years, third-generation Eric Rousseau is not only maintaining, but furthering his family’s incredible legacy.

Rousseau’s wines are rich, yet never oaky (despite the top cuvees enjoying 100% new oak) and whilst concentrated and vigorous, they retain an uncommon elegance and balance to them.  Most impressively, each wine is quite distinctive, expressing its terroir foremost, and being a Rousseau wine secondly.

The not-so-simple village wine reveals its best around five years from vintage, the premiers crus (with the exception of Clos St.-Jacques) and ‘lesser’ grands crus tend to drink well approximately six-to-ten years from vintage, whilst the top wines require at least a decade to really deliver upon their potential, and will last for at least three decades in the best years.
