Domaine Sylvain Cathiard

This modest domaine of a little more than four hectares is seldem seen, such are the tiny quantities produced of their wines, yet they are keenly sought by collectors and wine lovers the world over.  Magnificent holdings in Romanee St.-Vivant, Malconsorts, En Orveaux and Reignots are the gems in this estate, but it is the beautiful Vosne-Romanee villages and the pair of Nuits St.-Georges premiers crus (Murgers adn Thorey) that represent the best buying.vr-reignots-vines.jpg

As recently as 15 years ago, clones were still planted (667, 777 and 115 most recently favoured) but today a selection massale from their own vines is preferred.  Viticulture is traditional, with a conscious move towards minimal intervention where possible - herbicides and pesticides have been eschewed for nearly a decade, and an emphasis is placed on winter pruning to restrict yields, avoiding harsh green harvests.

Similarly, winemaking is very traditional, with all parcels 100% destemmed and handled very gently, maximising whole berry fermentations.  Up to a week long pre-ferment maceration is employed, with finesse the key trait desired in the wines, so extractions are kept as gentle as possible throughout the ferments.  New oak levels are genreally around 50% for the villages wines and between 80-100% for the premiers crus and the Romanee St.-Vivant.

These are beautiful wines, epitomising elegance and purity.  Sadly they are in very short supply.
