Domaine Tempier

Domaine Tempier is the best and most famous producer in the Bandol region, situated on the Mediterranean coastline approaching the Italian border.  Bandol is the inarguable home of Mourvedre, where it is not only the predominant grape variety, it produces full-bodied, somewhat wild wines chock full of character.

Tempier produce five distinct red cuvees: the 'Classique' which is lighter and blended with Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault; the rare 'Speciale' which is mostly Mourvedre with 20% Grenache; and three single-vineyard wines - La Tourtine (6ha of 80% Mourvedre with Cinsault and Grenache), Cabassou (1.2 ha underneath Tourtine of 95% Mourvedre and 5% Grenache) and La Migoua (a 5ha south-facing natural ampitheatre comprising 50% Mourvedre, 30% Cinsault, 18% Grenache and 2% Syrah).  Yet it is perhaps for their tremendous rose which is half Mourvedre and decreasing proportions of Grenache, Cinsault and Carignan that Tempier is held in the highest acclaim, such is the revere in which this wine is regarded.

Drawing on nearly 40 hectares of vineyards, Tempier's winemaking techniques are very traditional - barely changing over the decades.  The wines are vinified and aged for at least 18 months in large old oak foudres - between 2,000 and 8,000 liters capacity.  They offer startling longevity and ageability, developing more powerful and complex savoury flavours of undergrowth, meats, spice and herbs with age.  They are both unique and idiosyncratic, and a sheer pleasure to consume.
