Tasting notes

Château COS LABORY

2007:  A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon and 39% Merlot, produced from 66% of the total crop, and aged in two-thirds new oak.  From bottle (April 2010) there were fine and fresh aromas of light red fruits, which follow through on to the gentle, elegant and fresh palate.  The tannins are quite harmonious, and whilst it does not have the density or complexity of some vintages, it is a really lovely, classic style.  91 points, drink 2011-2020.  During the primeur tastings (April 2008) the wine had quite subdued aromas of plum and red fruits.  Lovely and soft, rounded on the palate, with very fine, chalky tannins, good intensity, good complexity and a lengthy finish.  There is plenty of berry fruit on the palate, very attractive in style.  This will drink well in the short to medium-term.  89-91 points.

2006:  A 50/50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.  Quite subdued aromatically, showing glimpses of dark fruits, minerals and spice.  On the palate the wine has mellowed a little since bottling, with good weight and solid tannins, which are well-integrated, ripe fruit and good freshness.  A wine designed for the long haul, doubtless shut-down at the moment.  89 points, drink 2020-2030.  (April 2010).

2005:  60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, aged in 50% new oak.  Slightly subdued aromas of soft, ripe red fruits, following through on the palate with plum and raspberry.  Quite weighty, although with extremely fine tannins, the wine has impressive complexity and length of finish for this property.  Perhaps not the most concentrated wine, but given this property’s price and reputation, it is wonderful.  92 points (April 2008).

2003:  Quite striking, lifted and almost exotic aromas of baked black fruits and sweet plum.  Very forward and approachable now, and showing the heat of the vintage, the wine nonetheless is attractive and delicious, although I hold doubts as to its ageworthiness.  90 points.  December 2006.

2009:  A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, 14.2% alcohol.  Very fine, fresh aromas with minerals, spice and black fruits.  On the palate there are very fine, chalky tannins of good persistence, beautifully balanced by freshness and ripe fruit.  Good complexity and length, a very impressive showing.  Could be excellent value?  90-92 points, drink 2016-2025 (April 2010).

2008:  55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 13% alchol and 3.57pH - will be bottled in June 2010.  Lifted aromas showing minerals, a touch of oak, and red fruits.  On the palate the wine is classically-styled, of good density, complexity and length, and with good freshness.  89-91 points, drink 2013-2020 (April 2010).
