Giant Steps

When Phil Sexton sold his Margaret River vineyard and winery Devil's Lair to wine industry behemoth Southcorp in 1996, he didn't waste time - he knew exactly what he wanted to do.  Move to the Yarra Valley and plant another vineyard.  So that's precisely what he did.  In doing so, and in less than two decades, he has created one of Australia's leading medium-sized makers of excellent cool climate wines, particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.giant-steps1.jpg

The main vineyard, eponymously-named 'Sexton Vineyard', is nestled high on the Warramate Ranges proximate to the likes of Yarra Bering, Coldstream Hills and Warramate.  Two other vineyards, 'Applejack', a close-planted site in the Upper Yarra Valley planted in 2001 was purchased in 2013, and 'Tarraford', a cooler site off the main valley floor between Healesville and Yarra Glen provide the bulk of fruit for the estate wines.  Other grapes are purchased from leased vineyards, which are occasionally bottled separately - such as Lusatia Park and Primavera vineyards.

Head winemaker Steve Flamsteed and Phil craft elegant, refined and very complex cool climate wines from the sites available to them.  The wines are always impressive upon release, yet build deeper complexity with age.  They have been exceptionally successful on the show circuit.
