Jean Foillard

The enigmatic Jean Foillard is rightly considered one of the leading 'natural' or 'minimal-interventionist' winemakers not just in Beaujolais, but throughout the world.  Yet it is not his philosophies or winemaking practices that M. Foillard should be so highly regarded for, but rather the majestic nature of his magnificent cru Beaujolais.

Farming around 14 hectares of vines, mostly in the village of Morgon but with small holdings in Fleurie, Foillard produces no less than five distinct cuvees, and all of the wines feature an uncommon complexity and refined fruitiness - certainly compared to your average Beaujolais.  Packed with flavour, they are neither forced nor excessive, and reward cellaring surprisingly well - up to 10 years for the finest wines.

Is it the 'natural' methods - minimal sulphur, no herbicides or pesticides, and biodynamic practices?  Perhaps.  Is it superb parcel locations throughout excellent terroirs?  Most likely.  Could it be the old oak barrels he employs, all of which come from Domaine de la Romanee-Conti?  Possible.  Or is it just a caring, considered approach to making deliciously drinkable wines.  Absolutely.
