Located high in the Alpine Valleys in a tiny town named Porepunkah (a few kilometers north of Bright), this vineyard was established in the mid 1990s by Eleana Anderson (who is the winemaker) and Bryan Nicholson. It's a dry-grown, frost-free and (very) cool-climate setting for what may be Australia's greatest 'unknown' vineyard and winery.
Miniscule quantities of Shiraz, Chardonnay and Tempranillo are produced from immaculately-maintained vines. Initial plantings of Shiraz in 1995 and 1998 were followed in 2002 with Chardonnay and Tempranillo. The winemaking philospohy is fairly simple - everything is hand-picked in small quantities over several weeks, allowing fully-ripened fruit to be utilised. Natural yeasts and barrel-fermentation for the Chardonnay, small open fermenters for the reds with malolactic fermentation occuring in barrel. The wines have a small egg-white fining prior to bottling. In all, the wines allow the site and varieties to express themselves, with the hand of the winemaker designed to be invisible.
