McLaren Vale

A mere hop, step and a jump (well, about 35 kilometres) from Adelaide, the McLaren Vale is one of Australia's best-known and most successful wine regions.  Here Shiraz and Grenache reign supreme, although there is plenty of Cabernet Sauvignon and even a goodly amount of Mourvedre, and amongst the whites, Chardonnay, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc contribute up to 20% of total production.

Future expansion is very limited, mostly due to water pressures, as underground sources (the watertable) is very depleted and new surface catchment has been banned since the 1990s.  Urban sprawl from Adelaide is also a significant issue.
