The village of Meursault accounts for nearly half of all white wine produced in Burgundy, and whilst there is indeed a small amount of red wine made in Meursault (including a little premier cru) there is no question that it is for Chardonnay that Meursault enjoys such fame.meursault.jpg

There are just over 130 hectares of premiers crus and a further 300 hectares of villages wines.  And whilst Meursault boasts no grands crus vineyards, few would argue that 'Perrieres' and 'Genevrieres' are both capable of producing wines of grands cru quality in the hands of the right makers.

Meursault is also particularly known for its concept of 'deuxiemes crus', essentially lieu dits (named vineyards) that are considered just a notch below premiers crus in terms of quality.  These notably share or adjoin premiers crus vineyards on the same altitude.
