Olivier Riviere

riviere-with-vines.jpgOlivier Riviere is very much at the leading edge of modern Spanish winemaking.  He has established his own small holdings in Rioja, in the southern sector in the small village of Cardenas.  He has augmented these grapes with some parcels purchased in the nearby appellation of Arlanza, due south of the city of Burgos, and in just a few short years has established himself as one of Spain's most revered winemakers.  His wines have rapidly become considered some of Spain's most sought-after, with all of the top restaurants and well-informed collectors seeking them.  Only tiny quantities are made, especially of his top cuvees.

Purity and freshness are the hallmarks of Olivier's wines, and he strives to make wines naturally, or with minimal intervention.  Unsurprisingly, his vineyards are worked biodynamically, and indeed Riviere worked at Domaine Leroy in Vosne-Romanee primarily to study biodynamics from Lalou Bize-Leroy.  vi-a-el-valdelape-a-en-c-rdenas.jpg

The journey to making exceptional wines has been a long one for Olivier, growing up in Cognac, studying oeneology in Bordeaux, working in Burgundy (at Domaines Leroy and Chassorney) before moving to Spain and working in Rioja Alavesa.  Today he seems very comfortable producing his exceptional wines his own way, and appears remarkably unaffected by the acclaim in which his wines are held internationally.
