With nearly 30,000 hectares of vineyards, Sonoma is an extremely diverse viticultural region.  Whilst it is best known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, tremendous Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot based wines are produced, and Syrah is proving to be a rising star.  Zinfandel is important, accounting for about 10% of plantings, but is now overshadowed by other varieties.

Within Sonoma there are a number of AVAs (American Viticultural Areas), and confusingly, many overlap.  The best-known include the Russian River, Alexander, Sonoma and Knights Valleys, and Sonoma Coast.
