Southern Tasmania

The broad 'Southern Tasmania' catch-all encompasses numerous micro-regions such as East Coast, Bicheno, Coal River Valley, Derwent Valley, and Huon Valley, amongst others.  And even if there is not a huge distance between these areas (as the crow flies, less than 150 kms at most, and thechannel-vines.jpg majority of vineyards are located within a 40km radius of Hobart) there is significant diversity in terms of style of wines produced.

Only about 20 minutes drive west of Hobart, the Coal River Valley is home to more than 20 producers and vineyards, whilst many more are scattered in seemingly all directions from Hobart.  Pinot Noir, tends to reign supreme, but there are a number of excellent Rieslings, Chardonnays and other varieties produced throughout.  Domaine A, in the Coal River Valley, has forged an enviably international reputation for the high quality of its Cabernet Sauvignon (as unlikely as that sounds).

Most makers are very small, often producing less than 1,000 cases of wine annually, yet quality tends to be uniformly high.
