Yarra Valley

Starting less than an hour east of Melbourne on the suburban fringes, the Yarra Valley is one of Australia's most famous, accessible and beautiful wine regions, and home to countless wonderful wines.  Vines were first established in the mid 19th century and today, there are well over 100 wineries and about 2,500 hectares under vine.  Many wineries are tiny, producing mere hundreds of cases or farming just a few acres of vines - essentially hobby farms.  Yet in the past 20 years, substantial interests have been acquired or established by many of the major wine companies.yarra-valley.jpg

However much of the best wine remains the preserve of smaller, boutique producers.  Some, such as Mount Mary, Wantirna Estate and Yeringberg (amongst others) have been making wonderful wines for decades, and are considered the 'old guard' although in all cases, the batton has been passed with generational change - yet the quality and style remains excellent.

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay share the mantle as the region's most important varieties, yet fabulous examples of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvingon and Sauvignon Blanc can also be found with good regularity.  In recent years varieties such as Nebbiolo, Pinot Gris, Viognier and others are slowly emerging with mixed success.
