TASTING NOTES

A blend of the original 1988 plantings and the 2001 Kaye vineyard plantings, the Dixon Pinot Noir is always the most approachable and open-knit of all Bindi’s Pinot Noirs. That said, it more than handsomely rewards ageing – at least 10 years build greater depth and complexity of flavour. The wine is medium-bodied, with crunchy berry fruit and lovely savoury spice notes. Very good length of finish, a harmonious blend of fruit-forward berries and earthy, savoury notes.

Macedon

Around an hour northwest of Melbourne lies one of Australia’s coolest wine regions, the Macedon Ranges. Although back in the 1970s and 80s Cabernet blends and Rieslings were probably the regions most important wine styles, today it is unequivocally Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that reign supreme, particularly when it comes to premium quality wines.

This is beautiful, often heavily wooded land, with many of its vineyards located above 600 metres altitude. And notwithstanding its proximity to Melbourne, it remains the preserve of small village-like towns that often contain small food and wine producers, wonderful bistros, and thriving B&B destinations. The perfect weekender perhaps for many a Melburnian!

It can be a region subject to the mercies of Mother Nature – bushfires are a constant threat in summer, frosts are an ever-present worry for vignerons throughout spring, and depending on the growing season, disease pressures – including downey and powdery mildew – can threaten the grapes more often here than in many other regions. And, as climate change makes its presence felt more and more with successive years and decades, hydric stress is becoming of greater concern for many makers.
